I believe the author’s message is to not give up, but don’t get your hopes up and dwell on something that could possible never come true. In the book, when Margo goes missing Quentin is obsessed with trying to find her and never gives up hoping he will. Everytime people think he’s crazy he finds a new clue leading to Margo’s disappearance. But also, Quentin has been so obsessed with finding Margo he lets it affect his life. He’s at the end of the school year, and Margo going missing has completely enveloped his life. His friends are moving on with their lives, finding relationships, and going to prom, having parties and meeting new friends when all Quentin does is pick apart every little thing to just find one clue to get closer to Margo. I think not giving up is a great message represented by this book, but also the fact that you shouldn’t let one thing take over you life completely, if it may never possibly be okay in the end.
The title of this story, “Paper Towns” is very appropriate for this story. In the book, Margo refers to her and Qks neighborhood as a paper town, in other words, fake and only focused on the surface of things. The story shows a deeper meaning to people, and shows that you never truly know what’s going on behind closed doors. No one knows why Margo disappeared, because she never told anyone why. The setting greatly involves the story, and shows how paper these towns can be. It shows where Margo goes and reflects her even when she’s gone.
